Mahama Says He Prays Daily for Nigeria’s Success to Prevent Migration Pressure on Ghana

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has said he prays daily for Nigeria’s progress, warning that challenges in the country could have direct consequences for neighbouring states, particularly Ghana.
Speaking at a major continental gathering, the Ghanaian leader emphasised that Nigeria remains central to West Africa’s stability, noting that developments in the country often shape the region’s economic and security outlook.
Mahama stated that Ghana’s fortunes are closely tied to Nigeria’s performance, adding that growth and stability in Africa’s most populous nation would naturally benefit surrounding countries.
He warned that prolonged hardship or instability in Nigeria could trigger migration pressures, as citizens seek better opportunities beyond their borders, placing a strain on smaller economies like Ghana.
Highlighting the demographic gap, Mahama noted that even a small fraction of Nigeria’s population relocating could significantly impact Ghana, given its comparatively smaller size.
Beyond policy concerns, the president described his position as deeply personal, revealing that he consistently hopes for Nigeria to overcome its challenges and achieve sustainable development.
He also pointed to the long-standing historical and cultural connections between both nations, citing shared ancestry and migration patterns that continue to link communities in Ghana and Nigeria.
Mahama concluded that Nigeria’s success is not only vital for its citizens but remains a strategic necessity for maintaining balance, growth, and stability across the entire West African subregion.
