Los Angeles Mayor Encourages African Diaspora to Shape City’s Future

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has called for greater involvement of the African diaspora in the city’s development, emphasizing economic empowerment, education, and collaboration as essential pillars for progress.

During a reception hosted by Nigerian-American entrepreneur Monalisa Okojie, Mayor Bass reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to fostering stronger connections between African and African American communities. She assured attendees that her office is open to supporting African community members seeking opportunities in business and civic engagement.

Okojie, the founder of Nehita Group of Companies, described the gathering as a step toward bridging economic and cultural gaps. She stressed that expanding opportunities for African diaspora businesses in Los Angeles is crucial for long-term prosperity.

“This event highlights the strength of unity and the impact of collaboration. When we come together, we build a legacy that extends beyond generations,” Okojie said.

As Black History Month continues, the event served as a reminder that honoring Black history is not just about reflecting on the past but also about taking action to create a more inclusive future.

Okojie also spotlighted her non-profit organization, Expose, which supports educational initiatives in the U.S., Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. She emphasized that strengthening global partnerships is key to fostering sustainable development and creating lasting opportunities for the diaspora.

With growing efforts to integrate African communities into the city’s economic framework, this initiative paves the way for deeper engagement between Los Angeles leadership and the African diaspora.
