The Lagos State Government has announced the cancellation of the Greater Lagos Fiesta 2025, the annual end-of-year celebration traditionally held across multiple locations in the state to usher in the New Year, explaining that the decision was taken in the overall interest of the state and with a focus on reflection, unity and spiritual renewal as Lagosians prepare to enter 2026.

The announcement was conveyed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, following the approval of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who directed that the planned festivities billed for December 31, 2025, should no longer hold.
According to the statement, the governor advised residents to use the period traditionally set aside for the Greater Lagos Fiesta, also known as the Countdown to 2026, to spend quality time in personal prayers for the nation, Lagos State and the general wellbeing of its people.
Governor Sanwo-Olu further urged Lagosians to reflect on the year ending and to pray for continued prosperity, purposeful leadership, peace, productivity and sustained progress across all sectors of the state, noting that collective goodwill and unity remain critical to Lagos’ development.

While extending goodwill messages to residents as the year draws to a close, the governor expressed optimism about the year ahead, stating that 2026 holds great promise for Lagos State and Nigeria, and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improved service delivery and good governance.
“On behalf of my family, I wish every resident of our dear State a happy and prosperous new year, and I urge everyone to use this period to pray for our nation, our state and our people,” the governor said.
“I want to assure you all that the year 2026 will be a better year for us in the State, as our administration is determined to work twice as hard to deliver the good and dividends of democracy for all Lagosians,” Sanwo-Olu added.
The statement also quoted the governor as enjoining residents to continue to live in peace and harmony, emphasising that unity, cooperation and shared responsibility remain vital to sustaining the progress and stability of Lagos State in the coming year.
