Gov. Sanwo-Olu Honours Fallen Heroes, Calls For Unity, Support For Armed Forces

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has praised the bravery of Nigeria’s fallen soldiers and active military personnel, calling their hard work the "unseen cost" of the nation’s peace. Speaking during a special Thanksgiving Service on Sunday at the Chapel of Christ the Light in Alausa, the Governor noted that the freedom enjoyed by citizens today was bought through the ultimate sacrifices of men and women in uniform. He described the annual event as a sacred time to pause and say thank you to those who protect the country's borders and internal peace.

The Governor’s message was delivered by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, under the theme “Sacrifice Remembered, Strength Renewed.” Sanwo-Olu highlighted that while many people go about their daily lives in safety, soldiers often work under very difficult and dangerous conditions. He expressed deep gratitude to God for keeping Nigeria united and thanked the Armed Forces for their discipline and selflessness in the face of various security challenges.

​A major highlight of the address was a special tribute to the "fallen heroes" the men and women who died while serving the country. Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that although their names might not be mentioned every day, their actions are forever written in Nigeria’s history. He reached out to the families left behind, acknowledging their pain and promising that Lagos State remains committed to supporting them. He assured these families that they are not alone and that the state will continue to provide care and honor for their late loved ones.

​Beyond combat, the Governor also praised the military for their growing professionalism in other areas. He noted their help during natural disasters, their protection of important buildings, and their efforts in keeping the country united. He then challenged all Nigerians to live in peace and respect one another, explaining that a united country is the best way to support the soldiers who defend it. He also asked religious leaders to keep praying for the safety of security officers and for wisdom for the nation's leaders.

The service featured a moving sermon by Pastor Seyi Oladimeji, who urged everyone to take responsibility for a peaceful society. The event was well-attended by top military commanders, members of the Nigerian Legion, and the wives of fallen soldiers. As the service ended, the atmosphere was solemn as prayers were offered for the souls of the departed, the comfort of their families, and the lasting peace of Nigeria.
