Nollywood filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele has spoken out about canvassing in cinemas and the persistent issue of piracy as she prepares for the release of her highly anticipated film, Everybody Loves Jenifa. The movie, which is set to premiere in December 2024, aims to generate an ambitious ₦5 billion at the box office.
During an exhibitor soirée held on November 20, 2024, at FilmHouse Cinemas, Akindele discouraged aggressive campaigning at cinemas, emphasizing that audiences should feel free to choose what they want to watch.
“I want to talk about canvassing. Let’s discourage canvassing so that people don’t feel threatened. We don’t need to start dragging people at the cinemas. People know what they want to watch,” she stated.
Addressing piracy, Akindele urged fans and stakeholders to protect the film, citing the financial loss her previous movie, A Tribe Called Judah, suffered due to piracy. “Please let’s be vigilant. This is our movie, and we want to make money from it. Imagine what we would have made if A Tribe Called Judah wasn’t pirated. Please protect this film for me.” she added.
The upcoming film features an impressive cast, including Akindele herself as Jenifa, Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana as Sege, Jackie Appiah, Nancy Isime, Stan Nze, Bisola Aiyeola, and Patience Ozokwor.
