The Nigerian government has called for a full investigation into the mysterious death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda. Lawal, who played for Vipers Sports Club and was also a final-year student at Cavendish University, reportedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala on February 24, 2025.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), described the incident as "pathetic and suspicious," demanding transparency in the investigation. She confirmed that Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has requested a full autopsy and thorough inquiry into the circumstances of Lawal’s death.
"The Nigerian government will not accept any cover-up. We demand a proper investigation to determine what truly happened. May his soul rest in peace, and may God grant his family the strength to bear this loss," Dabiri-Erewa stated.
Ugandan authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The Kajjansi Police Division confirmed that Lawal had arrived at the mall in his vehicle (registration UBQ 695G) to visit a friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national residing in Room 416 since February 20.
Naima claimed she left Lawal in the apartment preparing tea and went to a game center within the mall. Moments later, at about 8:00 AM, Lawal allegedly fell from the balcony. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have recovered his personal belongings, including two smartphones, open shoes, a training kit, and other items. Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interrogations to uncover the exact circumstances leading to his death.
The Nigerian government has vowed to ensure justice and is closely monitoring the situation.
