Federal High Court Sets Date for N30bn Lawsuit Against Meta Platforms (Facebook)

N30bn lawsuit against Meta by Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria(ARCON) for unvetted advertisements.

In October, the Federal High Court in Abuja will hear the N30bn lawsuit brought by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria(ARCON) against Meta Platforms Incorporated (the owners of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) and their agent, AT3 Resources Limited.

ARCON, led by Director-General Olalekan Fadolapo, aims to declare that Meta's publication of unvetted advertisements on Facebook and Instagram targeted at the Nigerian market is illegal and a violation of Nigerian advertising laws. This practice has reportedly resulted in revenue losses for the Federal Government.

Fadolapo confirmed that the Federal High Court granted ARCON permission to serve a writ of summons to Meta at the company's corporate headquarters in the United States. This action was taken because Meta claimed to have no physical office in Nigeria.

Fadolapo emphasized that they are concerned about Meta's business operations in Nigeria and expect the company to comply with Nigerian laws.

The case is scheduled for October, and ARCON is determined to address the issues in the Nigerian media space.
