•European Union Suspends $728 million aid to Palastine due to Hamas strike on Israel.
The European Union has taken a significant step by suspending development aid payments to the Palestinians, and a substantial sum of 691 million euros (equivalent to $728 million) in support is now "under review" in the wake of the Hamas assault on Israel.
European Union Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, made a decisive announcement, declaring, "All payments are immediately suspended. All projects are put under review. All new budget proposals, including those for 2023, are postponed until further notice. A comprehensive assessment of the entire portfolio is underway."
Varhelyi further emphasized, "The scale of terror and brutality against Israel and its people represents a turning point. There can be no business as usual. As the largest donor to the Palestinians, the European Commission is placing its complete development portfolio, amounting to a total of EUR 691 million, under review."
In light of the situation, Varhelyi stressed that it is imperative to address the foundations of peace, tolerance, and co-existence. He stated, "Incitement to hatred, violence, and the glorification of terror have poisoned the minds of too many. We need action, and we need it urgently."
