Dabiri-Erewa Urges Nigerians in Diaspora to Embrace Patriotism

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called on Nigerians living abroad to remain patriotic and committed to the nation’s development.

Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2025 Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA) Abuja Iftar/Lecture Prayer, themed “Islam and Patriotism,” Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the importance of national unity and progress, highlighting that patriotism is a fundamental value in Islam.

“As Muslims, patriotism is a core value embedded in our faith. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself demonstrated deep love for his homeland, and as Nigerians, we must embody this principle by working towards national unity, peace, and development,” she stated.

She acknowledged the significant contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora to the country's economy through remittances, investments, and knowledge transfer. She stressed that their continued engagement and commitment are vital for Nigeria’s progress.

“Our brothers and sisters abroad are among Nigeria’s greatest assets. Their skills, resources, and unwavering love for the country must be harnessed to drive sustainable development. No matter where we are, Nigeria remains our home, and we must continue to uplift its image and contribute to its progress,” she added.

Dabiri-Erewa further urged Nigerians abroad to serve as good ambassadors, excel in various fields, and invest in their homeland, reinforcing that these actions collectively demonstrate true patriotism.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Sheikh Abu Mazidatul Khaer bn Saeed provided an Islamic perspective on patriotism, addressing the misconception that Muslims are unpatriotic. He emphasized that patriotism extends beyond love for one's country to include respect for leadership, national pride, and active contributions to national development.

The event, hosted by Abdur-Rahman Balogun and Prof. Morufat Balogun, had in attendance notable personalities, including Hon. Justice Joke Adepoju of the FCT High Court and Air Commodore Lukman Lawal, Director of Islamic Affairs, Nigerian Airforce.

The Iftar programme concluded with prayers for the nation and a renewed commitment by attendees to uphold the values of patriotism, unity, and faith-driven service to Nigeria.

Also present were various alumni and community associations, including the Great Ife Alumni Association Abuja, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Muslim Alumni (MAPAMA), University of Muslim Alumni (UMMA), Ijebu Forum Abuja (IFA), and Abuja Muslim Forum (AMF).
