In a bold step to strengthen international engagement and harness the potential of its citizens abroad, Cross River State has unveiled a Diaspora Commission aimed at connecting its global community with local development efforts.

Governor Bassey Otu, who presided over the launch at the Government House in Calabar, emphasized the strategic importance of the new commission in mobilizing Cross Riverians living overseas for state-building initiatives.

“This commission is more than a formality it’s a bridge to our extended family across continents. We expect it to become a central platform for collaboration, investment, and cultural diplomacy,” the governor stated.

The Cross River State Diaspora Commission has been tasked with rallying support from the diaspora for infrastructure, economic, and social development projects within the state. It will also promote unity among Cross Riverians abroad and act as a channel for international partnerships and foreign direct investment.

Governor Otu charged the commission’s members with the responsibility of enhancing the state’s visibility globally and delivering practical results. He stressed the need for swift action, urging them to build on existing policy frameworks.

Leading the commission is Otu Esu Okor, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and pledged to deliver on the commission’s mandate.

“We see this not just as an appointment, but as a mission. We’ve already initiated dialogue with diaspora stakeholders who are eager to contribute to Cross River’s progress. Our team is ready to hit the ground running,” Okor assured

The establishment of the commission is part of the Otu administration’s broader agenda to tap into diaspora resources, skills, and influence as a key component of the state’s long-term development strategy.
