Community Demands Autopsy After Nigerian Mechanic Dies in Police Custody in South Africa

The Nigerian community in South Africa has called for a full autopsy following the death of a Nigerian mechanic, Ekpenyong Andrew, under controversial circumstances in Pretoria.
Andrew was reportedly taken into custody by officers of the Tshwane Metro Police in the Booysens area while returning home from work. Less than 24 hours later, his body was discovered at the Pretoria Central Morgue, raising serious concerns among community members.
According to accounts from his partner, police officers had earlier visited their residence to conduct a search for illegal substances, but nothing incriminating was found. The sequence of events has since fueled suspicions about the circumstances leading to his death.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), through its leadership, strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a possible case of extrajudicial action. The group has demanded a transparent investigation, insisting that a detailed post-mortem examination be carried out to establish the cause of death.
In addition, the union is calling for the immediate suspension of the officers allegedly involved and an independent probe by South Africa’s police oversight body. A murder case has reportedly been opened with local authorities.
Community leaders also urged both Nigerian and South African authorities to ensure justice is served, including compensation for the bereaved family if wrongdoing is established.
The case has been formally reported to the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, with assurances that diplomatic channels are being engaged. Meanwhile, Nigerians living in South Africa have been advised to remain calm but vigilant as investigations unfold.
