Amazon AWS Boosts Female Startup Funding Globally

Amazon Web Services, Inc. has unveiled plans to empower female startup founders in securing funding for their businesses.

AWS Women’s Demo Week, a global week-long event, will facilitate connections between women-led startups and potential investors in 18 cities worldwide, including Lagos, from November 6 to 10, 2023.

During this event, women founders will have the opportunity to pitch their startups to an audience comprising investors, partners, customers, and other stakeholders in the startup ecosystem.

Kathryn Van Nuys, Global Head of Specialized Startup Segments at AWS, stated, “In light of the challenging capital landscape, women-led startups have experienced a significant decline in venture funding. We aim to spark a movement that highlights the determination and innovation of these founders, enabling them to engage with investors during AWS Women’s Demo Week. Leveraging our network and resources, we seek to demonstrate that women-led startups are strong businesses deserving of serious consideration by all funders, not just those dedicated to supporting underrepresented groups.”

AWS emphasized that only 2.3 percent of global venture capital funding was directed toward startups founded exclusively by women in 2020, with Black and Latino women each receiving less than one percent. Eunice Ajim, Founding Partner at Ajim Capital, a venture firm participating in the demo week, commented, “AWS Women’s Demo Week is exceptionally timely, given the widening funding gap for women entrepreneurs in Africa. We are excited to showcase pioneering women founders from Africa on the global stage and assist them in gaining access to capital and establishing connections with international investors.”

The event is scheduled to take place in major cities such as New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Austin, Los Angeles, Bogota, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Santiago, Mexico City, London, Berlin, Lagos, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Tel Aviv, Amsterdam, and Madrid. In addition to pitching their startups, participating founders will receive $10,000 in AWS Activate credits, connect with AWS technical experts, and gain access to the URF startup community.
