African Diaspora To Return To Badagry

4th Door of Return: African Diaspora Reconnects in Historic Badagry

Lagos State is gearing up for the 4th Door of Return event, where members of the African Diaspora will have the opportunity to reconnect in the historic city of Badagry.

This event, sponsored by Lagos State in collaboration with the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) and the African Renaissance Foundation, is set to take place from October 18th to October 22nd, 2023.

Jermaine SanwoOlu, the Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora & Foreign Relations to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, shared this exciting news during an interview at the Channels TV London Studio.

The event, known as the "Joy of Return," aims to reunite Africans in the diaspora from countries such as Brazil, El Salvador, London, and more who are descents of the transatlantic slave trade and for individuals who have been able to trace their roots to Lagos, Nigeria.

According to Jermaine SanwoOlu, similar events in the past have been filled with emotional moments as Africans reconnect with their ancestral roots.

He emphasized the importance of knowing one's origins, stating, "Knowing where you come from helps you understand who you are and what you should be doing."

This event is expected to boost diaspora tourism in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole, serving as a platform for the government to strengthen ties with diaspora communities, plan for future improvements, and promote the Nigerian identity.
