President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday inaugurated the newly renovated Abuja International Conference Centre, now officially renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.
The commissioning ceremony in the Federal Capital Territory was attended by several high-ranking government officials, including Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other dignitaries.
In his address, Wike highlighted the significance of the project and attributed the completion of the renovation to President Tinubu’s directive and leadership.

“This conference centre was constructed in 1991 under a military government and had not been upgraded since,” Wike said. “Last year, when you [Tinubu] visited to inaugurate the ECOWAS Parliament, you expressed concern over its condition and requested that it be transformed. That request has now been fulfilled.”
Wike added that while previous administrations had used the venue, none had initiated a refurbishment of its scale. “Today, we have a modern centre that can stand alongside any international standard facility. It is only fitting that it be named after you.”
Originally built under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, the centre has been a key venue for national and international events.
In March, Wike announced that the renovation was being handled by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and would cost N39 billion. He emphasized the importance of delivering a facility that reflects Nigeria’s global standing.
“The total cost is N39 billion. Materials are already on site, and the work is about 70 to 80 percent complete,” he said. “Julius Berger has assured us that the project will be completed and handed over by May.”

Wike noted that the renovation aligns with the government’s broader vision of enhancing national infrastructure and projecting a positive international image for Nigeria.
